3rd Grade Generosity Follow Up!

Following up a story that was posted last month about the St. Mary Elementary 3rd grade project on business and commerce - the class presented a $200 check to Hope Unlimited! Karen Thomas, Executive Director, accepted the check, letting the children know it would be used to buy a baby bed for a child who would otherwise sleep in a box.

Congratulations again to Mrs. Morrow's class for your generosity and compassion!

Yeiser Art Center Outreach Expanding

St. Mary's Academy graduate, Mary Yeiser (Class of 1922), would be proud of the educational outreach emphasis the new director, Teri Moore, is taking. "This is not another gallery among galleries, this is the people of Paducah's art center." Moore has scheduled free, hands-on workshops for kids and adults over the next few months.

Art education and the Yeiser reach back to the center's founder, Mary Yeiser, who taught at Paducah Junior College as far back as 1940. The prominent Paducahan started the Paducah Art Guild in 1957 out of frustration that she didn't have many tangible examples of visual arts to show her students. The organization changed its name in 1990 to honor Yeiser.

A year from now Moore said she hopes the Yeiser has taken steps to tie together the local arts community, particularly between the public and artists in the Lower Town Arts District. "We have an obligation I think, " Moore said. "To succeed as an art community we all have to work together and educate."

Congratulations to the Yeiser, for continuing to grow Mary's vision!

St. Mary 3rd Graders Mean Business!

Students in Mrs. Morrow's class have proven their business sense by setting up their own business. The "Snack Shack" was the result of a class project on business and commerce. Each student submitted a resume to various selection committees for CEO, CFO, COO, advertising and service positions. Candidates were interviewed and positions filled. The executive board conducted market research to decide what need the company might meet. The student body was surveyed and schools snacks were chosen. The executive board prepared a business plan and applied for a loan at USBank. $295 was approved! Students then got to work - purchasing agents bought supplies, advertising agents made posters and provided information for school announcements, financial personnel kept track of income and expenses as well as securing sales space, and operations personnel conducted sales. After 4 days in business, the students made $580! A portion of the profits will be donated to Hope Unlimited and the remainder to help fund class field trips.

Congratulations to Mrs. Morrow's class - entrepreneurs with generous hearts! Thanks also to USBank for helping the students with the project.
